Argentine Citizenship by Investment and Tax: What Changes

Does Argentine citizenship by investment make you tax resident? What Ley 27.802 says, how residents and non-residents are taxed, and the wealth tax.

Short answer: not by itself. Article 194 of Ley 27.802, published on 6 March 2026, says naturalisation by relevant investment does not on its own create Argentine tax residence, except for people who were already permanent residents. If you are not tax resident, Argentina taxes only your Argentine-source income.

What Ley 27.802 says

According to a note from the Buenos Aires firm Abeledo Gottheil, article 194 of Ley 27.802 adds paragraphs to article 116 of the income tax law. Their effect: citizenship obtained through a relevant investment does not, by itself, make someone resident for tax purposes. People who were permanent residents before naturalising are the exception. The rule is subject to regulations from the executive.

How Argentina taxes residents and non-residents

Argentina taxes its tax residents on worldwide income and non-residents on Argentine-source income. Tax residence turns on where you live, not your passport, so spending long periods in Argentina after naturalising could make you resident under the ordinary rules.

The wealth tax

Bienes Personales is an annual tax on assets. Ley 27.743 (2024) unified the rates for assets held in Argentina and abroad, and set a scale that reaches a top rate of 0.75 percent in 2026 above a minimum threshold, according to analyses by Deloitte and the University of Buenos Aires. Residents pay on worldwide assets; non-residents on assets in Argentina.
