# Contribution or Bond: Choosing Your Route to Argentine Citizenship

USD 350,000 that is not returned, or USD 800,000 that may be. How to compare Argentina's two investment routes, with a worked example and the open questions.

Published: 2026-10-14

Argentina offers two ways to make the "relevant investment" its citizenship law now rewards. The choice looks like USD 350,000 against USD 800,000, but the real comparison is a cost you pay once against a cost you carry for years.

## The two routes at a glance

| | Treasury contribution | Government bond |
|---|---|---|
| Main applicant | USD 350,000 | USD 800,000 |
| Returned | No | Principal, if terms are as reported |
| Interest | Not applicable | None (described as zero-rate) |
| Term | Not applicable | Seven years (reported) |
| Family members | Fixed amounts on top | Fixed amounts on top (reported) |

Sources: the Ministry of Economy's announcement for the amounts; Bloomberg Línea and IMI Daily for the bond's reported terms.

## What each route really costs

**The contribution** costs USD 350,000. Simple, final, and the lowest outlay.

**The bond** ties up USD 800,000. Its cost is what that money would have earned elsewhere, plus the risk that it is not repaid as expected. As an illustration only, at a 4 percent alternative return, seven years without interest gives up about USD 250,000. At 6 percent, about USD 400,000.

| Your alternative return | Approximate cost of the bond over seven years |
|---|---|
| 2 percent a year | About USD 120,000 |
| 4 percent a year | About USD 250,000 |
| 6 percent a year | About USD 400,000 |

These figures assume full repayment at the end of seven years. The bond's actual terms are not published.

## When the contribution makes sense

- You want the lowest cash outlay.
- You do not want capital locked up for years.
- You would rather not hold Argentine sovereign risk.

Industry advisers quoted by IMI Daily expect about 70 percent of applicants to take this route.

## When the bond might make sense

- Your alternative returns are low, so the bond's cost is lower for you.
- You value getting capital back more than its cost over time.
- You are comfortable holding Argentine government debt.

## What to ask before choosing

1. What are the bond's published terms: tenor, repayment, transferability?
2. Can the bond be sold before maturity, and does selling it affect citizenship?
3. How is the bond treated for tax where you live?
4. What government fees apply to each route?

## Frequently asked questions

### Which route is cheaper?

For most people the contribution, because the bond's cost in lost returns can approach or exceed USD 350,000. It depends on your alternatives.

### Does the bond route cover my family?

Reports say it covers the main applicant only, with family contributions on top. This is not yet in official text.

### Can I switch routes later?

Nothing published says so. Choose once the terms are known.
